Wrapping up the month of January

I can’t believe we are coming to a close on January already. The month flew by so quickly.

I had a great virtual workshop with MediaNEXT about their dubbing platform and got to ask questions one-on-one with the head of the platform, Jacques Barreau. It was great to hear tips and tricks to make the process even smoother to operate. I also got back my grade and passed my dubbing homework with MediaNEXT. The icon image of this blog post is my certificate for that! It opens up a bigger avenue for jobs through MediaNEXT and I’ve already been emailed about a project, so I’m excited to see what lies ahead.

On January 22nd, I got to audit (watch only) a workshop put on by Atlanta Voiceover Studio featuring the amazing voice actor Debi Derryberry, otherwise known as the voice of Jimmy Neutron! I loved that show growing up and she’s so talented so I HAD to attend! It was great to get some tips on making character auditions shine, how to add more pre-life (efforts or words preceding a line) and about staying in character. Even watching the performers only gave me some ideas and inspiration to my acting. A neat experience! I hope to one day be able to be a performer.

This past Thursday I had my fourth one-on-one character coaching session with my coach Garnet Williams. Before the session, I practiced and wrote out about 10 voices I want to put on my character demo, and during the session we went through and discussed the ranking of each (which to put first on the demo, as it’s key to get the best ones at the top!). I have about 3 I need to nail down, but I’m feeling so confident about the others. I plan to record some adlibbing for my demo coach so that some fun lines can be written for each character.

I created my first Instagram reel which was a ton of fun. It was like making a mini movie! Back to my video production days in college, almost! The plot of the reel was “when the audition hits your inbox” and I showed myself getting pumped up in all sorts of ways before hopping in my booth to record! I thought the perfect music was “Eye of the Tiger” and it was great how the music synced up with it. I am brainstorming the next reel because it sure got a lot of views- over 3k!

Lastly, on Saturday, I was a part of a wonderful virtual Zoom meetup with over 60 women voice actors who are members of the #womeninvo Instagram page. Tania Possick hosted the event and it was so cool and inspiring to meet and connect with women around the country and globe and hear their journeys. One woman called herself a “pandemic VO baby” meaning she started her journey in voiceover during the pandemic just like me, and it cracked everyone up! I followed a lot of the women on the meetup and it really boosted my energy to see so many learning and thriving just like me!

I’m super grateful for another month of auditioning almost daily and improving my craft and meeting new people along the way. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for February!
